Senior Exhibition

What I think I will do instead of the current format, is delete my other tabs under "artist portfolio" and only have a tab for my senior show work and earlier (organized by year). And this paragraph will then explain my two themes that will be present in the show. Something like the following:

For the show I have two themes that are really big parts of my identity. My first theme I’ve identified as “simple joys.” And the other is drawing from my Latina roots. I believe life is long and should be unrestricted. We should have the ability to find these simple joys and that is what matters because life is going to happen regardless therefore what’s the point if not to be happy. Which is why I would like to focus on elements in my life that brings me happiness or simply the feeling of joy. I am currently choosing to execute this theme through a self-portrait I painted sophomore year, a moving wood sculpture of my dogs, and three acrylic paintings that represent my time in Spain.

The other theme I would like to focus on is my ties to Panama. It has largely shaped me into who I am today. I grew up eating Latin food, speaking Spanish, and watching and learning from my mom. Firstly, I would like to draw from my cultural heritage. My abuela is part Kuna, these are the indigenous people of Panama. They are known for their molas, and these could be compared to Appalachian quilts but are used for clothing instead. I am in the process of making two other portrait molas in addition to the one I made of my mom last year— one of myself and the other of my abuela. The one I made of my mom is not a traditional mola for many reasons, but the main reason is it is not stitched together. I want to played with traditional and hybrid forms of molas which is why the one of my abuela will be the most similar to the traditional molas, and somehow I will make my portrait even more stylized. It is very important to me to hold my roots closely, even if they are not seen always and I believe adapting the mola will highlight my Pan American lifestyle.
